Robyn Maciejewski's presentation on trauma-informed care was both insightful and impactful, shedding light on an often-overlooked aspect of speech-language pathology. Her mantra, ‘I don’t need to know if there was trauma. I don’t need to know what the trauma was. I only need to know the signals,’ resonated deeply.

Her reminder that everyone has faced significant stressors in some form was eye-opening and universally relevant. Robyn’s genuine passion for the topic inspired the audience to commit to trauma-informed care.

"Attending Robyn Maciejewski’s presentation on trauma-informed diagnosis and therapy was an enlightening experience.  Robyn’s deep knowledge, engaging delivery, and practical insights made complex concepts both accessible and applicable.

One of the most impactful takeaways was the concept of the amygdala hijack and its influence on therapeutic outcomes. Understanding how trauma rewires the brain and impairs executive functions highlighted the importance of adapting therapy approaches. Another key learning was the Think~Talk~Do model, which provides a structured approach to trauma-guided communication, ensuring a more compassionate and effective interaction with individuals affected by trauma.

Lastly, the discussion on differentiating trauma-related behaviors from cognitive-communication disorders was particularly valuable, as it reinforced the necessity of a multidisciplinary and dynamic evaluation process. Robyn’s expertise and passion for trauma-informed care were evident throughout the session. I highly recommend her presentations to anyone looking to deepen their understanding of trauma’s impact on communication and therapy.

"Robyn’s presentation was incredibly engaging, and I loved how we got to collaborate and explore how different generations interpret the word ‘trauma.’ It was fascinating to see the contrast between younger and older generations' perspectives.

I especially appreciated how Robyn explained the impact trauma has on executive functions and daily life. My biggest takeaway was realizing that trauma doesn’t just affect the person who experiences it—it also deeply impacts those who love, support, and surround them. Robyn emphasized how important it is to educate ourselves, reminding us that helping someone through it isn’t easy or clear-cut.

What stood out the most was Robyn’s honesty. Her personal experiences navigating the broken medical system made everything feel relatable and grounded."

"I had the honor of attending Robyn’s presentation Beyond Burnout: Building Resilience with Trauma-Informed Care at the 2025 ISHA Convention, and it was truly remarkable.

Robyn encouraged continuous engagement through thoughtful questions and discussions, making everyone feel involved. The topic she presented was highly relevant to the field of speech-language pathology and the challenges we face.

As a second-year graduate student, I gained insights I’ll take into my professional practice. Hearing seasoned professionals, like the professor seated next to me with 30 years of experience, echo the value of Robyn’s insights showed her wide-ranging impact.

Robyn’s ability to introduce the big picture and build upon it made complex concepts easier to digest. Her structured presentation style ensured the audience left with a deeper understanding of the topic’s significance."

"Robyn’s professional development seminar helped me connect trauma to multiple areas of personal and professional development.

-learning about how trauma impacts a person's everyday life and ability to learn and communicate

- connecting it to myself and realizing that I have trauma too

- how trauma looks for different people

- considering past trauma/experiences when meeting new clients. Being empathetic and trying to understand the client's past and present, and using that info to make informed clinical decisions."

Sarah Reece, SLP

"This professional development session changed the way I thought about my students and myself. I was initially hesitant to learn about trauma-informed practices, worried it was outside my scope as a speech therapist. Robyn’s presentation made the information clear and relevant to every single one of my students.

It felt like discovering a missing puzzle piece for my practice. The impact of trauma on students and ourselves cannot be ignored! This session inspired me to continue seeking knowledge about the effects of trauma on my students."

"Robyn’s approach to trauma-informed care has transformed my perspective. It’s eye-opening how individuals can respond to the same traumatic event in such different ways. This reinforces the idea that it doesn’t matter what the trauma is—what’s crucial is being trauma-informed in our practice. I often reflect on how my own brain may have changed post-trauma and how these shifts have impacted my own perspective and responses.

What I appreciate most from Robyn’s training is the recognition of trauma responses and the emphasis on adapting approaches to meet the current needs of our clients, students, or even colleagues. Whether I’m supporting my own children with PTSD or communicating with colleagues, I now understand the importance of adjusting my approach to meet people where they are emotionally. At its core, trauma-informed practices are about compassion, understanding, and kindness—and Robyn has equipped me with the tools to do just that."

This perspective has helped our team provide supportive, gentle care, assuming a possible trauma history without needing to understand the details. It’s a mindset shift I’ll carry throughout my career."
